“Maine” Books You May Have Missed

Little Gale Gumbo by Erika Marks
Camille Bergeron flees her native New Orleans to escape an abusive, alcoholic husband, Charles. She and her two daughters, Dahlia and Josie, have intentions of running away to Canada but instead end up on Little Gale Island off of the coast of Maine. There they rent a small apartment from Ben Haskell and his son, Matthew. The girls quickly form a close (and competitive)  friendship with Matthew and Camille and Ben gradually grow closer as well. More settled into island life, Camille, with Ben’s encouragement, opens Little Gale Gumbo Cafe to serve up some of her famous Creole dishes and her restaurant quickly becomes an island favorite. It seems that their troubles are behind them, until Camille’s husband, Charles, comes calling once again.
