Room by Emma Donoghue

A haunting and suspenseful read, Room is narrated by 5-year-old Jack. Room is Jack’s whole world. He was born in Room and has never left the limited 11X11 space which holds a kitchen, bedroom, and bathing area for both Jack amd his Ma. Jack’s mother was kidnapped at 19 from her college campus and she has been held hostage in Room for 7 years. Almost nightly, when Jack is tucked away in bed in the wardrobe, Jack’s mother receives a visit from Old Nick, their captor.

Soon after Jack’s 5th birthday, his mother begins to insist that they somehow escape. But then begins the horror of facing the outside world.

Room explores the unbreakable bond between mother and child. Jack’s narration and observations made the story more innocent but much more emotionally intense and raw. A wonderful choice for book clubs as there are so many levels to this book.
