The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

I have just finished reading The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. Games takes place in the future when North America has been decimated and what remains is divided into 13 Districts and a Capital. During an uprising, the 13th District is completely destroyed by the Capital and to commemorate the Capital’s victory and to remind people of their power, they created the Hunger Games. For the Games, each district is to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to fight to the death in a specially devised arena and the event is televised to all districts. The story is told by 16-year old Katniss Everdeen, who volunteered to take her younger sister Prim’s place in the annual Hunger Games.

This is a gripping, action-packed, character-centered, page- turner. As I had mentioned in a previous post, I do not read a lot of science fiction or fantasy but I could not put this young adult book down. I also have a tendency to shy away from overly violent texts but although the book has a grim tone, most of the violence was implied and not too descriptive.

I cannot wait to read the second installment of this trilogy!
